The last place Kyle thought he’d ever come back to was Blackwater Falls.
He’d come there as a boy when his father married a shifter, and left town after high school when he’d had his heart broken by one of them. His qualifications could have landed him a position in a big city, making good money, but he was through with stress and drama.
Being Military Police for all of those years and a couple of tours in Afghanistan had pretty much chewed him up and spit him out. What was left felt like a burnt out shell most days. He’d taken a job as Hawke Sutherland’s new deputy as a last resort. If he could stand to be around the shifters, he might just be able to do this.
Spencer Sutherland takes one look at him and knows Kyle’s the mate he’s been waiting for, but Kyle has serious commitment issues, and he’d vowed long ago never to become involved with a shifter again.
Is Kyle ready to take a chance on love and find what he’s been searching for all along?
Sometimes love has a way of finding you whether you’re ready or not.

This was a decent addition to the Blackwater Falls series. It was nice to see the human being the tough, alpha male while the shifter was the less dominant personality. And we revisit previous characters – Hawke and Jace, Camron and Travis – to see how their relationships are developing.Cougar Country introduces us to Kyle, who grew up in Blackwater Falls with an unpleasant cougar-shifter stepmother. He’s back after a traumatic career in the military police, and he resents that this town was the only place where he could find a job to fit his needs. His resentment colors his reactions to Spencer, and to Spencer’s declaration that they are mates.
Spencer is Travis’s older brother. He’s a fairly easy-going guy, friend of the sheriff, manager of the family’s local hardware store. We’re told that he’s been a bit of a player up ‘til now, not interested in relationships. And then along comes Kyle.
Spoilers ahead
Spencer turns out to be a damsel in distress. His first encounter with Kyle makes him physically ill from the sudden rush of mating hormones. At another meeting, Spencer trips and Kyle comes to his rescue. Later, Spencer has several other episodes that require Kyle’s timely / heroic intervention. And all the time, Spencer is pining for Kyle, and Kyle is pushing him away with words, and pulling him in with sex. The big tough cougar-shifter even storms off sobbing at one point.
The story was relatively short; only 1735 locations. And short on details, too. I would have liked to get to know the characters better. Ultimately, I thought both men had some unfortunate past relationships, but those didn’t come off as very significant. And Kyle’s wartime trauma seemed unfortunate, but I didn’t think it was as awful as the authors wanted it to be – he wasn’t really to blame, and he wasn’t actually present when the “traumatic” part happened.
My biggest disappointment with the story though, was the resolution. Kyle’s conflicts resolved themselves “off-screen” and for no particular reason. All of a sudden Kyle was okay with being Spencer’s mate and they were set to live happily ever after.

Cougar Country Blackwater Falls Book 3 edition by Shannon West Susan E Scott Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Really enjoyed this story. I felt Kyle's anguish at coming back to his hometown and not knowing if he COULD fit in. I liked how Spencer was not overbearing and an alpha-hole.
The two authors who wrote this wonderful love story, have excelled themselves this time, I loved it! For me as a reader, this series (this is book 3) ticks every box that I want and need in a story - a good clear storyline, likeable sub characters, passion combined with hot sex and two wonderful lead figures. What makes this series so successful is the simple storyline - due to their strength in their writing skills, they don't need to rely on complex plots coupled with numerous sub characters (that you have to go back every few pages to remember who is who), they concentrate their efforts on delivering a romantic, passionate love story! I also love the way they include previous characters from the other two books, it's always nice for readers to see what is happening in their lives. What is also unique, is how two authors can write so cohesively together, that you never know which author wrote/edited which bit of the book, it just flows and flows like lava out of a erupting volcano, beautiful but all consuming. The synopsis of the book covers the storyline really well and anything I added, would be classed as a "spoiler" so I won't "spoil" the enjoyment of finding out for yourselves. Is this the best book of the series so far? Yes! but then again, I said that after reading each of the two previous books! Love this book, love the series, can't wait to see who the next book is going to be about...maybe the big, bad boy Holden?
wasgood
I really wanted to like this story, but I found the author missed the mark for me. There could have been more depth brought to why Kyle did not like cougars, and the whole drama at the end was anti-climatic. It ended without any of Kyle's issues being resolved.
The majority of this book was good. However it's like the authors hit their word limit and the book just ends. All of the problems between Kyle and Spencer are forgotten, "I love you" is said, and the book literally ends. Not the best literary endeavour by this duo. Don't understand why the authors, let alone their editor/publisher, would think this an acceptable ending.
I absolutely adore this series! This is Spencer and Kyle's story. Kyle was raised by a shifter step mom and wants no part of being with one. He returns to Blackwater Falls after applying for a deputy position. He has the experience and is the logical choice since he already knows the town's secret.
Spencer is blown away when he realizes the new deputy is his mate. Now how does he convince him of that?
After a serious accident, will this love blossom or will Kyle fight it?
These two authors are truly amazing and are always consistent for me with their 5 star books!
